Most popular movies based on ticket sales…

For years, I’ve been bugged the the claim of a movie being the “top grossing film of all time”. The problem is – ticket prices have changed through time, so it’s not really about how much money was made, but more about how many tickets were sold. So, I built this spreadsheet using the “All-Time USA Box office” grosses from IMDB, and the average ticket prices (ATP) from the National Association of Theatre Owners website. Then, dividing the Gross by the ATP gives the number of tickets sold …

Historic ‘micro-blogging’! Secret inscription in Lincoln’s watch…

Wow!! How exciting, that a watchmaker made a ‘micro-blog’ in 1861 on the INSIDE of President Lincoln’s pocket watch! Of course I’m joking about the ‘micro-blog’, but it really did make me think about how people are posting on Facebook and Twitter so much. Unlike most of those pointless ‘posts’, THIS was something worth "Twittering"! Here’s the text of the Reuters article: WASHINGTON (Reuters) Mar 11, 2009 – A gold watch owned by Abraham Lincoln bears a message marking the start of the U.S. Civil War, but the …

Microsoft Tag… and other new things…

As a geek, I love seeing, reading and trying new technology. Google has made their ‘Google Labs‘ known for several years, and has done a good job of posting the stuff they’re working on. Some cool, some not. That’s part of new ideas… As a wanna-be ‘technical evangelist’, I like to see what Microsoft is doing, and how I can use and promote it. The problem is – Microsoft makes it hard to know what their working on! Microsoft created their ‘Live Labs‘ site as a response to …

Home windmills…

Several years ago when the big talk about ‘clean energy’ was hydrogen fuel cells, and more specifically trying to put those cells in cars, I was surprised that the focus was on cars rather than the engine itself. I recall the biggest problem being that "they" were having a hard time making the hydrogen engine small enough to fit in a car – not – that they couldn’t build the engine. So, what if each home had an air-conditioning size (or even car sized) hydrogen fuel-cell engine installed …

Google releasing specific household searches in court…

Wow… Google released queries made from a specific household in a court case. Now, the case is pretty horrible, but that’s not the point – the fact the Google HAS the data to share is what’s disturbing. The fact that they can share with the courts what day and what HOUSEHOLD made SPECIFIC SEARCHES is the issue. WHY does Google save the IP address?! There’s NO reason for that. Oh… for tracking purposes so they can sell targeted advertising? No. Oh… for making their product better by analyzing …

SmoothHD.com

Microsoft does it again… www.SmoothHD.com is a demo of streaming hi-definition video. They have several samples, and it’s pretty amazing. At full screen, the video looks fantastic on a big monitor, and I’m really blown away.
